Donald Trump’s involvement in Scottish golf began with his ambitious plans for the Menie Estate on the Aberdeenshire coast.
In 2006, the New York property developer unveiled proposals for a major golf resort at Balmedie, north of Aberdeen, promising significant investment and hundreds of jobs.
The development became one of the most contentious planning battles in modern Scottish history due to concerns over its impact on environmentally protected sand dunes. Following a public inquiry, the Scottish Government approved the project in 2008, paving the way for construction to begin.
Trump significantly expanded his Scottish golf interests in April 2014 when he purchased Turnberry resort in South Ayrshire and renamed it Trump Turnberry.
Acquired from Dubai-based Leisurecorp for around £35 million, the deal brought one of the world’s most famous golf venues under his ownership.
Turnberry’s Ailsa course has hosted multiple Open Championships and is regarded as one of the crown jewels of Scottish golf.
Over the following years, the Trump Organization undertook an extensive redevelopment programme at Turnberry, ultimately investing more than £100 million in renovations.

Trump Turnberry was targeted by pro-Palestinian activists in March 2025 when campaign group Palestine Action vandalised the Ayrshire resort.
This year, activists unfurled a huge Palestinian flag on the beach nearby.
In the early hours of March 8, 2025, protesters sprayed messages including “Free Gaza” and “Free Palestine” on buildings and painted “Gaza Is Not For Sale” on part of the golf course.
Police Scotland launched an investigation after receiving reports of damage at around 4.40am. The protest came in response to comments made by Donald Trump about the future of Gaza, with the group claiming responsibility for the action.

The White House has denied any conflict of interest and hit out at critics.
Responding to the release of the financial records, a White House spokesperson said: “Neither the president nor his family has ever engaged – or will ever engage – in conflicts of interest.
“President Trump proudly made the United States the crypto capital of the world through executive actions, supporting legislation like the GENIUS Act, and other common-sense policies to drive innovation and economic opportunity for all Americans.
“All actions by President Trump and his administration are taken in the best interest of the American people – and any so-called ‘reporters’ pushing otherwise are recycling the same, tired, false narrative that Democrats and the legacy media have been pushing for a decade.”
A spokesperson for the president’s family business, the Trump Organization, said: “This disclosure once again demonstrates that the Trump Organization continues to maintain a strong financial position, supported by world-class, valuable assets, substantial liquidity and a conservative balance sheet.”
They added: “The breadth and depth of this filing further underscores our commitment to transparency.
“At nearly 1,000 pages, it represents one of the most comprehensive financial disclosure reports ever submitted and demonstrates a level of financial transparency unmatched in presidential history.”
