A 19-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries following a Tuesday night shooting in downtown Montreal, police say.

The shooting took place near the intersection of Sherbrooke and Montcalm Sts., police say, with several 911 callers reporting gunshots around 10:40 p.m.

Montreal police found the teenager with gunshot injuries to the upper body, spokesperson Caroline Chèvrefils said. His life is not considered in danger.

According to initial reports, the victim was on the sidewalk when someone opened fire on him before fleeing, Chèvrefils said.

Police have met with witnesses, she said, but have yet to make an arrest.
