It was an incredible comeback win for Jacob Fearnley on Court 15. The Brit was up against it after going two sets down to Alex Michelsen but rallied back in a five set win to book his place in the second round. It’s been a tough last 12 months but Fearnley had a smile on his face at last as he found some confidence at Wimbledon and will look to push on from here. After his win over Michelsen, Fearnley is hopeful that this win can boost his confidence and will aim to build on this performance going forwards.

“Yeah, of course it helps confidence. Yeah, I mean, I wouldn’t say it’s like necessarily a turning point or anything like that,” Fearnley said in his press conference.

“I just, yeah, I’m honestly just happy to get the win, to be honest. I just try and stay in the present, keep it match by match, and obviously just try and do my best every match. You know, recently, I think I said it in my pre-tournament press, that I have just been trying to enjoy playing again and enjoy, you know, life outside of the court, as well.

“So far it’s been helping me a lot on the court. Yeah, I’m just going to try and keep that going, because yeah, when I’m enjoying my tennis, that’s when I play my best.”

A big test awaits Fearnley in the second round when he takes on Spaniard Jaume Munar. A big win for Munar in the opening round as he knocked out Queen’s Club champion Francisco Cerundolo. The Spaniard has a physical and powerful game with no clear weaknesses in his game. Munar will be full of confidence and will see this as a big opportunity to reach the third round of a Grand Slam.

Fearnley will aim to be aggressive on serve and will use the forehand in order to dictate the rallies. Meanwhile, Munar will use the backhand to be physical from the baseline and will aim to be efficient on return. This will be a tough match for Fearnley but if he can be as resilient as he was in the first round then this is definitely a winnable match for the Brit.

Prediction: Fearnley in five sets.

A second year in a row that Arthur Fery has won a match at Wimbledon. The Brit tuned in both figuratively and literally thanks to his headphones to ignore Damir Dzumhur and prevail in a four set battle. The British wildcard has been playing some incredible tennis recently and is determined to carry on his recent form at Wimbledon as he searches for more success at SW19. After his win against the Bosnian, Fery admitted that his win this year felt more normal than last year.

“Yeah, partly because – well, mostly because my ranking is higher, and I feel like I’m more deserving of being here on my own ranking,” Fery stated in his press conference.

“It’s obviously, yeah, obviously unbelievable for us players who aren’t in the top 100 to be able to get wildcards. I have been very well supported by the LTA and All England for these past years. But, yeah, it feels more normal. Today I played, my opponent was not much higher ranked than me, so yeah, all that makes it feel more normal.”

Next up for Fery is surprisingly qualifier Otto Virtanen. There was a composed look about Virtanen as he kept his cool to edge out Ben Shelton in a fifth set tiebreak to knockout the fourth seed. On paper, it was a shock but when you look at Virtanen’s form it shouldn’t really be a shock. The qualifier reached finals in Nottingham and Birmingham and has a big serve mixed with powerful tools from the baseline. Now, Virtanen will look to keep his run going as he looks to make the third round of Wimbledon.

Fery will use the slice to try and force errors from Virtanen while the backhand is expected to do most of the damage. Meanwhile, Virtanen will serve aggressively and will use the forehand to pin Fery behind the baseline. This will be a match between two confident players and this could go all the way. This is too close to call but the home crowd may power Fery over the finishing line.

Prediction: Fery in five sets.
