Back in 2008, Taylor Swift introduced herself to the world with “Love Story,” a song in which a teenage girl fantasized about her Romeo getting down on one knee and proposing marriage. The song has since soundtracked countless proposals and first dances for Swifties and their betrothed all over the world. Eighteen years later, the promise of a Swiftian wedding is finally coming true. On July 3 — if all the reports are accurate — she and football star/podcaster Travis Kelce will get married under the bright Madison Square Garden lights in front of 1,000 of their closest friends. As she herself wrote when they got engaged, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” It’s not a high-school popularity contest, but these two are, to many, the most popular people in the world.
She’s been anticipating being a bride for years (lyrically and otherwise), but the wedding is also happening on her favorite holiday weekend. Swift is known for her Fourth of July parties, which have become Rhode Island lore. It was on this hallowed weekend in 2023 that Swift celebrated her last weekend of independence with close friends Selena Gomez and the Haim sisters, among others. Days later, Kelce tried and failed to give her a friendship bracelet with his phone number on it at her Kansas City show, the first domino to fall in the couple’s fabled romance. Given Kelce’s synonymity with America’s favorite pastime, you could say there’s an invisible string connecting these two to this weekend.
So much of Swift and Kelce’s wedding has been kept under wraps. The guest list has been widely speculated about but remains mostly unconfirmed. The décor taking over the Garden could be garden-themed, or princess-themed, or, if one TikTok I saw is onto something, UFO-themed. What we do know for sure is that there’s something happening at 4 Penn Plaza on July 2 (I think us normies would call that a “rehearsal dinner”) and something bigger happening on July 3 (what I’d assume is the “wedding reception”). NDAs are involved, and streets surrounding the venue will be closed. Most of our sleuthing to find out every single bit of information we can about the wedding as it’s happening will be done the old-fashioned way: by following what the Swifties are posting across social media. Here’s everything that we’ve been able to find out so far.
Some more of the reported guest list has leaked. “Page Six” says the starting lineup of the New York Knicks — Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns and Jalen Brunson — are among the 1,000 coming to the wedding. Swift attended game 4 of the NBA Finals with her Haim besties, so this invite isn’t a surprise so much as a chance for Alana Haim to print some more gag shirts.
A red carpet appeared and then magically disappeared in front of Madison Square Garden, “Page Six” reports. Despite it being promptly removed, could we see a red carpet in the final setup on Friday? Maybe! The event is black tie, after all.
The New York Times spoke to Scott Munro, president of the city’s detectives union, who pointed out the volume of events that have happened in the city this summer: the Knicks games, the World Cup games, and now one of the biggest weddings of the year. “They should have their wedding in Pennsylvania or wherever she’s from,” he told the Times.
Stalking the deliveries door at MSG has become a full-time job for many a paparazzo. “Page Six” clocked boxes of “lobster meat, blackened chicken, packaged chicken, boneless skinless chicken breasts, and chicken legs” being carted in a day before the purported rehearsal dinner. Also getting forklifted in were boxes of fries and onion rings. We love a high-low moment. Or maybe MSG is just refilling its concessions for regular use — who’s to say?
TMZ is claiming Travis and Taylor are doing some Imagineering up in their venue. Within MSG, wedding planners are reportedly constructing a fairy-tale castle and garden. CBS News got video of crews unloading a truck labeled “Garden Party 1 (scenic)” on Monday.
