All proceeds from Play4Purpose golf tournament will benefit the Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen Community Centre and West Village Revitalization Project
A beach-themed charity golf tournament will help raise funds for underprivileged youth in the Sault.
Organized by Play4Purpose, a student-run non-profit, the tournament will benefit the Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen Community Centre and the West Village Revitalization Project.
Set for July 17, registration is open for teams of four for $800, with a full 18-hole day planned at Crimson Ridge Golf Club with breakfast, lunch and dinner.
“We have prizes for the best dressed, and a lot of on-course games and challenges will be beach themed as well, so it’s just a nice way to get everyone involved,” said Landon Assiginack, one of the organizers.
Last year, the non-profit’s inaugural tournament raised $3,700 for the Soup Kitchen, and organizers opted to include West Village as a second beneficiary this week for the work they do with local youth.
“They’re centred around the same idea of supporting a lot of the at-risk and underprivileged youth in the community,” Assiginack said.
“They’re trying to do more programming, whether it’s sports, arts, whatever it is, for the kids in the community, so both of the places we’re donating to this year both have a lot of youth engagement and programs.”
Although Assiginack and fellow local organizer Jack Tuckett recently graduated from university, they plan to remain involved with the student-run Play4Purpose to organize tournaments that benefit local youth.
“This is something that we both have discussed, and that we want to continue to run,” he said.
“Regardless of where we are, what we’re doing, we want to continue this for the long term.”
