Firefighters in Surrey were busy battling a fire in a commercial business park Thursday evening.

Around 8:30 p.m. Thursday (July 2), Surrey Fire Service crews responded to reports of a fire in the 12300-block of 88 Avenue and were met with black smoke showing from the roof area.

The single-storey, large commercial warehouse building is used by BC Hydro as well as Powertech Labs, Surrey Fire Service assistant chief Geoff McIntyre said, noting the fire was upgraded to a second alarm, drawing 24 firefighters and eight fire trucks to the scene.

It was a difficult fire to fight due to some high-voltage operations inside the building as well as low visibility inside because of all the smoke, he added.

“The fire was eventually extinguished … our crews did a great job and contained it to the building of origin,” he said, sharing that at one point, an in-house fire suppression system was activated that uses a fire-suppressing foam.

No firefighters or civilian injuries were reported; the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
