A longtime National Hockey League defenseman and Olympic gold medalist could be a potential PTO option for the Vancouver Canucks in training camp this fall.

As is the case every year in late-August through the early part of September, teams around the National Hockey League sign unrestricted free agents to professional tryouts (PTO), which allow those players to participate in training camp and preseason games to try and earn a one-year contract for the upcoming year.

The Vancouver Canucks went down this route 12 months ago, bringing in forward Sammy Blais on a PTO, while also signing him to an AHL contract for the 2024-25 campaign, and it looks like the team could explore this option once again in the coming weeks.

Veteran defenseman could be potential PTO option for Vancouver Canucks

While the Vancouver Canucks might not be in market for a blueliner at this time, it never hurts to have a bit of competition in training camp and there may be a defenseman that could be an intriguing option for the club, especially from an experience and veteran presence point of view.

In a recent article for Heavy.com, Nestor Quixtan suggests that Patrik Allvin should take a look at longtime NHL defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic as a potential PTO target for the club ahead of training camp.”Signing Vlasic wouldn’t be a costly endeavor for the Canucks. The club could sign the veteran blue liner to a Professional Tryout Contract (PTO), with an offer for a full-time NHL contract if he makes the team.

Alternatively, the Canucks could just go ahead and sign Vlasic to a one-year deal worth league minimum. Such a deal would not create a shackling commitment for the Canucks, while affording Vlasic one final shot at the NHL.” Quixtan said.

You can never say never, but the odds of Marc-Edouard Vlasic signing with the Vancouver Canucks, whether that be a PTO or a guaranteed one-year contract for the 2025-26 campaign, seems pretty low at this point because the club already has a number of players that are vying for a spot on the third pairing including Victor Mancini, Elias Pettersson, Pierre-Olivier Joseph and possibly even Tom Willander.
