The Calgary Stampede’s first Sunday brings a full day of rodeo, live music, family programming, Indigenous culture, agriculture showcases and one of the biggest heavy horse events of the week.
July 5 also includes Stoney Nakoda Nation Day at Elbow River Camp Presented By Enbridge and the Heavy Horse Show World Champion Six-Horse Hitch at the Nutrien Western Event Centre.
Sunday at Stampede Park
All-day events include the Canadian Armed Forces Displays, Kids’ Midway, interpretive programming at Elbow River Camp, Live Sand Sculpting at the BMO Centre’s Western Oasis and market vendors at The Market starting at 8 a.m.
Agriculture programming continues across the grounds, including Born To Buck presented by Holt Renfrew, Cattle Trail, Country Critters, Milky Way Dairy displays and demonstrations, Draft Horse Town, Horse Haven, Nutrien Ag-tivity in the City and the Sheep & Pork Showcases.
The Chore Horse Competition is scheduled for 9 a.m. in the Northern Lights Arena in the Agriculture Zone Presented by Brandt.
Heavy horses and cattle penning
The Heavy Horse Show begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Nutrien Western Event Centre.
The evening highlight is the Heavy Horse Show World Champion Six-Horse Hitch at 7 p.m.
In a June 26 release, the Calgary Stampede said the event features teams of one-ton horses in polished leather harnesses competing for a $25,000 first-place prize.
Team Cattle Penning presented by Petrus Resources is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. in the Nutrien Western Event Centre.
The Stampede Rodeo is set for 1:30 p.m. at GMC Stadium, followed by the Evening Show at 7:15 p.m.
Family-friendly picks
Family programming starts early Sunday, with Bubble Playshop at 10 a.m., Team T&J Present Kids’ Dino Stompin’ Jamboree at 10:30 a.m. and Little Rodeo Pro at 11 a.m. in the Kids’ Midway.
Paw Patrol: Dino Rescue! is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. and 3:35 p.m., with Paw Patrol meet-and-greets at noon and 4:30 p.m.
Gabby’s Dollhouse Dance Party is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. and 5:20 p.m., with meet-and-greets at 2:40 p.m. and 6:15 p.m.
Freestyle Motocross and Full Throttle are also scheduled throughout the day.
Elbow River Camp
Elbow River Camp programming includes Council Tipi, flag raising, Camp Riders, Horse Culture, Traditional Games, interpretive tours, tipi viewing and Sharing Our Culture.
Stoney Nakoda Nation Day is scheduled for 3 p.m.
A meat cutting competition is also listed at Elbow River Camp at 11 a.m.
Live music and evening entertainment
The Coca-Cola Stage lineup includes Bennett Mitchell at noon, Kue Varo & The Only Hopes at 1:15 p.m., Alex Hughes at 2:30 p.m., Boy Golden at 7:30 p.m. and Our Lady Peace at 9 p.m.
Nashville North has Garrett Gregory at 4 p.m., Kelsi Mayne at 5:15 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., Brock Phillips at 7:45 p.m., Russell Dickerson at 9:15 p.m., Foxx Worthee at 11 p.m. and Johnny Rivex at 11:59 p.m.
The Big Four Roadhouse schedule includes Quinton Blair at 4 p.m., 5:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., and Sons of Legion at 9 p.m.
