Two people were recovered from the Lachine Canal following an overnight search involving the Montreal Fire Department and the Canadian Coast Guard, according to the fire department.
The initial call was received at 11:55 p.m. on July 4 after two people were reported to have fallen into the Lachine Canal near Parc René-Lévesque.
The Montreal Fire Department said approximately 20 to 30 responders took part in the operation.
The search was carried out by two fire department vessels and a Canadian Coast Guard vessel, which alternated during the operation.
Using sonar aboard one of its boats, the fire department said crews located and recovered the two victims. They were then turned over to Urgences-santé for treatment and transport.
The fire department said it could not confirm whether the two victims had died.
According to preliminary information from the fire department, one person is believed to have fallen into the water and the second attempted to rescue them.
The department said it could not confirm the exact circumstances of the incident, or the age and gender of the victims.
The operation concluded at approximately 2:02 a.m.
