Steve’s Music Store, a longtime staple of Montreal’s music scene, is closing its last location.
“After decades of laughter, late-night conversations and the hum of instruments being tried for the very first time, Steve’s Music Store will be closing its doors,” a statement posted to the store’s website says.
Founded in 1965 by Steve Kirman, the Montreal business expanded over the decades, opening locations in Toronto and Ottawa, as well as the West Island and South Shore.
Kirman died in 2012, leaving his son Michael to run the operation.
Earlier this year, financial difficulties forced Steve’s to shutter all its locations except for its main store on Ste-Catherine St. E.
A tough economy and competition from online retailers proved bruising for the business, Michael Kirman told The Gazette in February.

The store hasn’t announced a closing date, but said more details will follow in the coming days.
“Even though the storefront will close, the memories won’t,” the statement from Michael Kirman said.
“The music you created, the moments you shared and the energy you brought into this space will stay with us forever.”
