A family of five has lost its home after a fire tore through a building in the Montreal neighbourhood of Rivière-des-Prairies Sunday morning.

The fire began on the balcony before spreading through the building and to the roof, the fire department said.

A 911 call alerted firefighters to the blaze around 6 a.m.

Around 100 firefighters arrived and quickly extinguished the flames, according to the fire department.

The family has been taken in by the Red Cross.

Firefighters say the building will probably require extensive renovation.
