A major project to rehabilitate Montreal’s Theatre Building is underway at Place des Arts and will continue through the summer of 2028.
The Theatre Building, which houses the Théâtre Maisonneuve, Théâtre Jean-Duceppe and Salle Claude-Léveillée, is undergoing renovation of its exterior façade.
The cost of the project is $134 million.
In a news release on its website, the Place des Arts said the goal is to ensure public safety and “preserve an exceptional building.”
According to the statement, studies and inspections highlighted an “advanced state of deterioration” in the panels of the building’s exterior envelope, which are required to be replaced by 2028.
“This rehabilitation work will address public safety issues, ensure the long-term preservation of the building (originally constructed for Expo 67), and renew the facade with durable materials while respecting the original Brutalist architecture,” reads the statement.
The project will also “create a stronger connection to the street.”
Programming will continue in the performance venues. Public spaces, restaurants, shops, and parking facilities will also remain accessible.
But Salle Claude-Léveillée will be closed during this period and the National Bank branch will be temporarily relocated to 955 Maisonneuve Boulevard West.
