LETTER: Surrey parents need to get a grip on their dirt-biking teens

I thought it was just me noticing young people tearing around on motorized dirt bikes.
Hate to be one of those seniors who want everyone “off their lawn” and safely tucked in by 9:00, but lately there has been a rash of really disturbing accounts of antisocial behaviour by bikers. I followed a couple of young bikers the other day as they were travelling on the sidewalks of 20th Avenue towards Ocean Park.
They sped along past pedestrians and interfered with drivers as they attempted a right hand turn.
I called out to one of them after a near miss and collision, “It’s called a sideWALK!” The lead driver then pursued me to my home and sat outside my house as he called for the police.
I won’t go through the scene that followed, but suffice to say we have a fine police force and community members who are noticing this form of intimidation happening in our lovely neighbourhoods. I am a senior, a grandmother and an upstanding citizen…held captive by a 15-year-old who wanted to ride a motor bike on a sidewalk.
Get a grip of your kids, parents!
Know what they’re up to. Don’t wait in the wings hoping they’re doing the right thing. At no time should we worry about our safety because we speak up.
