Markus Chambers says he will not seek another term as Winnipeg city councillor, bringing an end to eight years representing St. Norbert-Seine River.

Chambers announced Tuesday that he will not run in the Oct. 28 civic election, saying he wants to spend more time with his family after serving two terms on council.

“It is with a full heart, and a heavy dose of bittersweet emotion, that I share I will not be running for re-election,” Chambers wrote in a Facebook post.

In a separate statement, Chambers said the decision followed “careful consideration and many meaningful discussions” with his family.

“St. Norbert-Seine River has become a part of who I am, but the time has come for me to step back and focus on my family, who have supported me unconditionally through every long night, missed dinner, and early morning meeting,” he said.

Historic election

Chambers was first elected in 2018, becoming the first Black person elected to Winnipeg city council. Following his election, he also served as deputy mayor before later becoming acting deputy mayor and chair of the Winnipeg Police Board.

He was acclaimed to a second term in 2022.

In his statement, Chambers reflected on accomplishments ranging from improvements to neighbourhood parks and infrastructure to flood mitigation and support for local businesses.

“Please know that my commitment to this community will not end with my term. I will always be a neighbour, a volunteer, and a champion for St. Norbert-Seine River,” he said.

Chambers added he will continue serving residents until the new council takes office later this year.

“I am not going anywhere. This is my home, but I am excited to step back into the role of ‘Dad’ and ‘Husband’ and now Grandpa full-time.”

Fourth councillor to step aside

Chambers is the fourth incumbent Winnipeg city councillor to announce they will not seek re-election this fall.

River Heights-Fort Garry Coun. John Orlikow, Waverley West Coun. Janice Lukes, and St. Vital Coun. Brian Mayes have also announced they will not run in the Oct. 28 election.

The municipal election will be held on Oct. 28.
