Inaugural disc golf tournament to honour memory of Jordis Briscoe

A local family is turning grief into community connection this summer, organizing a disc golf tournament in memory of Jordis Briscoe whose life was cut short by mental illness.
The first annual Jordis’ Memorial Disc Golf Tournament will be held July 18 at Cooper’s Hawk Disc Golf Course at the Sportsplex.
Disc golf was one of Briscoe’s greatest passions, according to his sister, Brianne Johnston, who is organizing the tournament. She said the event was created to celebrate that passion while opening up conversations about mental health.
“This tournament was created to honour his memory by bringing people together to enjoy the sport he loved, while raising awareness and support for mental health,” Johnston said.
Johnston said they are hoping to fill all 18 teams for the inaugural event, which they describe as an all-ages, community-focused day welcoming players of every skill level.
Once play wraps up, York Machine Shop is hosting a barbecue by donation. All proceeds from both the tournament and the barbecue will go toward mental health initiatives and resources in the local community.
Johnston said she hopes the tournament becomes an annual tradition, a day for people to connect, share stories, win prizes and support a cause that touched her family directly.
The event check-in runs from 9:00 t- 10:30 a.m., with a start scheduled for 11:00 a.m.Teams can include up to six players and individuals without a full team can still sign up and be placed with other players to fill out a roster.
