The Edmonton Elks Finally Lost. Good.

Nobody enjoys losing. But sometimes a loss tells you more about a football team than a winning streak ever could. The Edmonton Elks enter this week’s game at 3-1 after falling to BC. It was their first setback of the season and a reminder that winning every week in the CFL is difficult.

Now comes the important part.

This Is Where Good Teams Separate Themselves

Every team loses games. The best teams don’t let one loss become two. Edmonton returns home to face an Ottawa Redblacks team that is still searching for its first win at 0-4. The Elks already defeated Ottawa 29-21 in Week 1, so they know they can beat this opponent. That doesn’t guarantee another victory. But it does give Edmonton a chance to reset the season before one loss grows into a losing streak.

Momentum can return quickly. Last week’s defeat shouldn’t erase everything Edmonton accomplished during its 3-0 start. The offense has shown it can score. The defense has made timely plays, except for last week..Most importantly, the team has given fans something they haven’t experienced in several seasons, hope.

That excitement shouldn’t disappear because of one loss. In fact, a strong performance this week could restore much of the momentum that built over the first month.

Why Commonwealth Stadium Matters

Last week I wrote about how winning football can bring fans back to Commonwealth Stadium. That hasn’t changed. If anything, this game is even more important. Fans understand that no team goes undefeated. What they want to see is resilience. Will we see a bigger home crowd this week? Maybe a few more fans in the seats, but probably not a drastic increase.

If Edmonton responds with a complete performance against Ottawa, optimism around the organization continues to grow. Every win makes it easier to believe that this season is different.

One Game Can Change The Story

The standings say Edmonton is 3-1. Ottawa is 0-4. On paper, the Elks should be the better football team. Now they have an opportunity to prove it. Good teams answer adversity.

If Edmonton can put last week’s loss behind them and defend home field, the conversation quickly shifts back to where it was a week ago. Not about a stumble, but about a team that continues moving in the right direction.
