A Toronto man has been charged with second-degree murder after a man was found dead on a Scarborough street earlier this week, police say.
The suspect, 28, is accused of killing Levon Byers, 32, on Monday afternoon, Toronto police said in a news release on Wednesday.
Byers, from Toronto, was found with a single gunshot wound on Terraview Boulevard near Victoria Park Avenue, south of Highway 401. Police had responded to a call about unknown trouble there at about 3:15 p.m.
Police said Byers was pronounced dead at the scene and is the city’s 17th homicide victim of the year.
Accused got out of vehicle minutes after man found dead
A short time later, at about 3:20 p.m., police responded to a shooting call at a second scene at Victoria Park Avenue and Sheppard Avenue E., north of Highway 401.
Police said the suspect exited a vehicle in the area and was found with gunshot wounds. He taken to hospital, where he remains with serious injuries. A gun was found in the vehicle, police added.
On Wednesday, police said the men were found in two different locations but it is not known exactly where they were shot.
The suspect has been charged with: possessing a firearm without holding a licence; possessing a restricted firearm knowingly not holding a licence; occupying a motor vehicle with a firearm; and possessing a loaded regulated firearm.
The suspect is due to appear in a Toronto courtroom on Thursday.
