CP24’s Bill Coulter says muggy weather could create showers and thunderstorms in the GTA.
Toronto and much of the GTHA is under a severe thunderstorm watch as Environment Canada warns “strong wind gusts” and “heavy rain” is on the way.
The national weather agency says localized rainfall amounts of up to 60 millimetres and wind gusts reaching 90 km/h are possible this afternoon and into the early evening.
Officials also issued a more localized thunderstorm warning for a storm moving east at 55 km/h from Halton Hills toward Kilbride, with damaging wind gusts of up to 110 km/h and torrential downpours expected along its path.
According to both warnings, the agency says the storm is expected to travel through Milton, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga and Toronto.
Environment Canada says some areas could receive higher rainfall totals if multiple thunderstorms move over the same location.
The warning also notes that the storms could damage roofs, fences, tree branches and other structures, emphasizing that heavy rain may also lead to flash flooding and significantly reduced visibility.
Residents are urged to seek shelter immediately if threatening weather approaches, avoid driving through flooded roadways and secure loose outdoor objects.
