In Week 6 of the 2026 CFL season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (2-2) will be fighting an uphill battle when they travel to Mosaic Stadium to face the Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-1). Hamilton is attempting to bounce back from a one-point loss at home to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a game where their starting quarterback, Bo Levi Mitchell, suffered a major ankle injury that required surgery. On the other side of this matchup, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have had a strong start to the season and are working to prove they remain the dominant team in the West Division in 2026.

Last week, the Tiger-Cats were playing an efficient game offensively until Mitchell was knocked out of the game, but after that injury to their signal-caller, Hamilton struggled to gain traction the rest of the game. Despite those challenges, the Tiger-Cats controlled the tempo of the game offensively, and defensively they did an outstanding job against the Blue Bombers’ passing game, especially after Winnipeg quarterback Zach Collaros left the game with an injury. This week, the Tiger-Cats must find a quarterback that is able to at least play competently enough to put together extended drives and work to keep the Roughriders’ offensive unit off the field. In addition, the Tiger-Cats’ defensive front seven must step up against the Roughriders’ run game.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are heavy favorites in this game because of their stability at the quarterback position and their home-field advantage due to the rabid Roughriders fan base. However, on the defensive side of the ball, the Roughriders have consistently given up more points than expected, and they have had to grind out close victories. So while the Roughriders simply need to show up and execute on both sides of the ball, there is a chance that if Saskatchewan plays a sloppy game, they could find themselves being upset by a Tiger-Cats team that still has hopes to make a championship run this season.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Key to Victory #1: Maximize QB Jake Dolegala’s Skillset

This week is a huge opportunity for quarterback Jake Dolegala to prove that he has what it takes to put the ball in the hands of the outstanding playmakers of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Last week, Dolegala looked like a fish out of water against the Blue Bombers, but his advantage is that he is a pocket passer like Bo Levi Mitchell, unlike Canadian quarterback Tre Ford, who plays more effectively on the run. If Dolegala comes out and lays another egg, the Tiger-Cats will likely turn to Ford to find a spark, along with recently signed veteran CFL quarterback Jarret Doege.

For Dolegala to succeed, the Tiger-Cats passing attack needs to focus on short and intermediate passing concepts. While Dolegala struggles to push the ball downfield on vertical concepts, he is an efficient rhythm passer who can move the chains when protected. In addition to executing a rhythm-based passing game, it is essential that Hamilton’s receivers catch the passes that come their way; otherwise, the Tiger-Cats could have a long day offensively.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Key to Victory #2: Establish a Relentless Ground Game

Another component of the Tiger-Cats’ offensive game plan that can help Dolegala get comfortable in the passing game is to get Hamilton’s running game going early and often. However, the Tiger-Cats are thin at the running back position, and much of the success of the Tiger-Cats’ run game rests on the shoulders of American running back Larry Rountree III. Last week, the Tiger-Cats attempted to use Rountree and the running game to grind out first downs in the 4th quarter to seal a two-point win against the Blue Bombers, but Rountree’s fumble in the 4th quarter essentially set up the Blue Bombers’ opportunity to kick a field goal to steal a one-point win.

In the two games that Hamilton has won so far this season, their offensive line has demonstrated the ability to physically take over the line of scrimmage, which allows Rountree to be a more effective runner. Along with helping the Tiger-Cats pick up first downs, an effective running game also allows them to better protect their quarterback and creates opportunities for explosive passing plays using play-action concepts. Because of Dolegala’s lack of arm strength, the only way he will be able to produce big plays downfield in the passing game is with solid play-action concepts and protections.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Key to Victory #3: Duplicate Week 5’s Defensive Suffocation

The inability of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive front seven to stop Blue Bombers running back Brady Oliveira last week became the focal point of criticism directed at the Tiger-Cats defensive unit this week. However, up until the 4th quarter, when Oliveira essentially put the Winnipeg offense on his back, the Tiger-Cats had played effectively on defense, especially against the Blue Bombers’ passing game. The star-studded defensive backfield of the Tiger-Cats did an outstanding job of keeping the Winnipeg passing game in front of them, and Hamilton’s pass rush was able to keep Zach Collaros off-balance.

This week, the Tiger-Cats will need to continue playing outstanding football on defense, with cornerback Jamal Peters and safety Stavros Katsantonis leading the way. In addition to having legitimate playmakers on the back end of Hamilton’s defense, the Tiger-Cats’ defensive line is built to generate a consistent pass rush and to terrorize quarterbacks. This is especially important against an efficient, veteran quarterback like Trevor Harris, who can dissect any CFL secondary if given time to sit in the pocket. For Hamilton, they will need to force Harris to make plays on the run without sending blitzes, which Harris can neutralize with his quick decision-making.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats Key to Victory #4: Quiet the Mosaic Stadium Crowd Early

Traveling to Mosaic Stadium to face the Roughriders is never an easy task for the Tiger-Cats due to the Roughriders’ loud, disruptive fan base. For Hamilton to have their best chance to have a hospitable visit to Mosaic, they must come out offensively and control the tempo of the game. If Hamilton turns the ball over early in the game, or consistently fails to move the ball against the Roughriders, the effect of the crowd could be a real problem for whichever quarterback is leading the Tiger-Cats’ offensive efforts.

Ideally, the Tiger-Cats can flip the Roughriders’ home-base energy on defense by forcing early turnovers and potentially converting them into points. If the Tiger-Cats can come out firing on all cylinders, then they can take the Roughriders crowd out of the game early, which will make it easier for Hamilton to operate in crunch time. Ultimately, this game poses a big challenge for the Tiger-Cats, but if Hamilton does an effective job of controlling what they can control and sets their quarterback up for success, then they have a reasonable opportunity to pick up a critical win on the road against one of the top teams in the CFL in 2026.
