Quebec is reviving plans to redevelop a key stretch of Route 132 on Montreal’s South Shore, announcing Saturday that a new project office will be created to move the long-awaited initiative forward.
The project targets a five-kilometre section of the corridor between Highway 730 in Sainte-Catherine and Rue Principale in Delson. The government says the goal is to improve traffic flow while promoting public transit and active transportation in the growing region.
“The creation of a project office marks a decisive step forward,” Premier Christine Fréchette said in a statement.
According to the government, the office will bring together planners, engineers and other specialists.
Several options will be analyzed, including transforming the roadway into an urban boulevard with two lanes in each direction, adding a reserved transit lane, and installing sidewalks and bike paths.
A technical committee will also be created, including representatives of project partners and a liaison officer for the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke.
The project is included in Quebec’s Infrastructure Plan 2026-2036. The government said the project’s timeline and cost will be determined once the planning phase is complete.
