Peacock‘s newest series didn’t waste any time becoming a big streaming success for the platform. Immediately upon arrival, the series came very close to reaching the top of the streaming charts.
After one day, The Five-Star Weekend has made it to No. 2 on Peacock’s Top 10 TV shows streaming in the United States, via FlixPatrol. It is only behind the popular reality dating show Love Island USA, which has been releasing new episodes daily heading into its Season 8 finale on July 12. This is an impressive debut for The Five-Star Weekend, given that it’s an all-new series which hasn’t had seven years to build an audience, as Love Island USA has.
The Five-Star Weekend Is Based on the Hit Book
Created by Bekah Brunstetter, The Five-Star Weekend is based on the original book by Elin Hilderbrand. The series also boasts a strong cast, including names like Jennifer Garner (Deadpool & Wolverine), Gemma Chan (Eternals), D’Arcy Carden (Barry), Regina Hall (Scary Movie), ChloĆ« Sevigny (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Harlow Jane (She Came to Me), and Timothy Olyphant (Justfied).
The eight-episode drama series follows Hollis Shaw (Garner), a famous chef and cookbook author who documents her life regularly on social media. Her ideal life takes a dark turn after her husband’s sudden death, leaving Hollis to realize that many of her other relationships have grown distant. Hollis gets the idea to invite one close friend from each stage of her life to spend a long weekend together at her luxurious home in Nantucket, along with inviting a surprise “fifth star.”

Critics have responded well to The Five-Star Weekend, giving it an approval rating of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes. It has been called a “good, old-fashioned character drama that’s an easy and escapist watch.” Not enough audience reviews have yet been submitted in order to give the show an audience score, though there are some so far which have given The Five-Star Weekend some very high praise. One reviewer referred to the show as “everything I didn’t know I needed in a TV series.”
“This was fun to watch,” said someone else. “Women characters written with complexity and depth, while still heartfelt, funny, and relevant to today’s experience of diverse womanhood is a joy to witness… I’m not usually into shows about groups of women friends because the women are usually a fetishized depiction and I can’t get past the deeply instilled (perhaps unconscious) disrespect. This series changes that. Congrats to all involved in creating this series.”
The Five-Star Weekend is streaming on Peacock. All eight episodes were released at once, and the show can be watched in its entirety now.
