1 man injured in police officer-involved shooting in Surrey

One person was injured in an officer-involved shooting that happened in Surrey Wednesday night between a Surrey RCMP Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) officer and man who allegedly had a knife.
Around 8 p.m. Wednesday (July 8), police officers responded to a report that a distressed man had left a residence in the 14100-block of Melrose Drive with an edged weapon, an Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) release shared.
Officers attended the area and conducted patrols to locate the man and, shortly after 8 p.m., the man was located by police near 111A Avenue and Wallace Drive.
“There was then an interaction which resulted in a Conducted Energy Weapon (CEW) deployment and shots being fired by police,” the IIO release said.
The man sustained “serious” injuries and was transported to a local hospital for assessment and treatment.
The IIO was notified of the incident shortly after it occurred and is investigating the incident.
