Embattled toy retailer Toys “R” Us is closing its store in Winnipeg’s Polo Park area.
Staff hung signs sharing the news — and advertising liquidation pricing — on Friday. The signage does not indicate when the store, located at 1445 St. Matthews Ave., will close for good.
A store manager declined to comment on Monday, directing a reporter to Toys “R” Us Canada Ltd.’s head office. The company did not respond to interview requests.

Toys “R” Us announced in January it would close its Polo Park location, but reversed course a few weeks later. The Canada-wide company has been in creditor protection since February.
Last month, Toys “R” Us announced its Transcona-area store at 1560 Regent Ave. W. is closing. The Transcona and Polo Park stores opened in the fall of 1989.
Stella’s planning café near Portage, Main
Winnipeg restaurant chain Stella’s is planning to open a café at 330 Main St., this fall.

Located near the iconic Portage Avenue and Main Street intersection, in the same building as GoodLife Fitness, the café will focus on grab-and-go items such as paninis, focaccia pizza, sandwiches, salads and freshly baked goods.
The 1,100-square-foot café will have 30 seats and employ 12 to 15 people, said Rob Del Grosso, vice-president of operations. Stella’s expects to get possession of the space on Sept. 1 and plans to open in November.
“We’re excited,” Del Grosso said. “We’re continuing to grow and there’s been significant interest in the Stella’s Café concept.”
It’s the chain’s fourth café. It also has seven restaurants, a catering service and two Kevin’s Bistro eateries.
