Police looking for suspect after ‘suspicious fire’ at Surrey city hall

Surrey Police are investigating an early Monday morning fire at Surrey City Hall that “resulted in significant property damage.”
Surrey Fire responded to a call of a fire at city hall around 3:30 a.m. Monday (July 13). Upon arrival, firefighters found the southwest side of the building was engulfed in smoke.
“Surrey Fire Services advised SPS officers that the fire had likely started outside City Hall in a portable toilet, located against the building, which then caused the building’s exterior glass to break due to the heat,” Surrey police said in a news release. “Smoke then entered City Hall and triggered the interior sprinkler system.”
Police believe the fire is “human-caused” and are looking for a possible suspect who was seen on security footage before the incident.
The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, 45-65 years old, with short hair and a slim build. He was last seen wearing a light-coloured hat, a dark-coloured shirt with a graphic on the front, dark-coloured shorts, and slides with light-coloured socks. He had a white lanyard around his neck and a dark-coloured fanny pack around his waist.
SPS is asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or who has information about the fire to please call SPS’ non-emergency line at 604-599-0502 and quote file 26-72511 (SP).
A spokesperson for the City of Surrey’s said that the first-floor front counter was closed Monday due to the fire, but had opened “with reduced” capacity on Tuesday.
