Comox to host Island’s first EV-powered movie night

Comox is going to be the first community on Vancouver Island to host a fully electric vehicle-powered movie night.
On July 24, BC Hydro and the town of Comox will be hosting a screening of Disney’s Hoppers, and the movie will be powered entirely by an electric vehicle.
“The event will see noisy, gas‑powered generators replaced with a quiet, setup that runs off an EV battery — eliminating noise, fumes, and emissions,” says a release from BC Hydro. “It’s a real‑world demonstration of how electric vehicles powered by the province’s electricity system — already 98 per cent clean — can energize large community gatherings.”
The movie night is part of BC Hydro’s broader effort to show what a clean‑powered future looks and feels like — including how electric vehicles can serve as mobile power sources for homes, businesses and community events.
“As more British Columbians adopt EVs, these vehicles represent a flexible and increasingly powerful energy resource,” the release says. “Events like this also highlight the role BC Hydro’s reservoirs and recreation sites play across the province, offering free or low‑cost spaces for people to connect with nature and enjoy community experiences supported by clean energy.”

The movie experience is a small but meaningful example of how clean energy can enhance everyday experiences. While the clean‑energy technology is a highlight, the heart of the evening remains the shared experience. Families are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs and enjoy a relaxed summer evening under the stars.

People can start arriving at 7:00 p.m., with the movie beginning at around 9:15 p.m. at sunset. Admission is free, and concessions and giveaways will be available throughout the evening. BC Hydro will be bringing more clean‑powered events like this to communities across B.C. The first took place in Mission on July 10 and the next will take place in Revelstoke on August 21.
