The 78th Idylwylde Invitational, Canada’s longest-running amateur match play championship, returns to the Idylwylde Golf & Country Club this week, welcoming many of the country’s top amateur golfers.
Steeped in nearly eight decades of tradition, the Idylwylde Invitational has long been recognized as one of Northern Ontario’s premier amateur sporting events, said a press release.
Past champions, emerging young talent and accomplished amateur competitors from across the country will once again gather to compete for one of amateur golf’s most prestigious titles.
Tournament activities begin Thursday, July 16, with the official practice round.
Thursday evening will also feature the annual Champions Dinner, where past champions gather to celebrate the traditions of the championship and honour 2025 champion Jimmy DuDumonie from Hamilton G&CC and 2026 tournament honouree Bruce Helbig, a four-time Idylwylde Invitational Champion and eight-time finalist.
Competition officially begins with the 18-hole qualifying round on Friday, July 17.
Following Friday’s qualifying round, the championship enters its signature match play format.
The top 16 qualifiers will advance to the Championship Flight, where they will compete in head-to-head matches over the weekend to determine the 2026 Idylwylde Invitational Champion.
Positions within the Championship Flight are determined by Friday’s qualifying scores, with ties for the final qualifying positions traditionally settled through a sudden-death playoff.
Players qualifying for the remaining top four flights will also compete in match play, while competitors in the remaining flights will contest 36 holes of stroke play over Saturday and Sunday.
The championship is expected to feature several of Canada’s highest-ranked amateur golfers along with a number of former Idylwylde Invitational Champions.
Among those expected to compete is Don Martone, winner of the 2021 Idylwylde Invitational and the 2025 Canadian Senior Men’s Championship, whose return adds another accomplished champion to an already outstanding field.
“The Idylwylde Invitational has always been about more than championship golf,” said Interim Tournament Chair Vince Palladino.
“For 78 years, it has celebrated competition, sportsmanship and tradition while showcasing some of the finest amateur golfers in Canada. We are proud to continue that tradition and look forward to another memorable championship.”
Admission throughout the championship is free, and spectators are encouraged to attend and experience one of Canada’s premier amateur golf tournaments.
Match play provides a unique opportunity for fans to walk alongside competitors and witness every shot as players battle head-to-head for the championship.
Competition continues throughout the weekend, culminating with the Championship Final on Sunday afternoon, when another name will be added to the proud history of the Idylwylde Invitational.
