NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. — North Wilkesboro Speedway could be one of the most important weekends of the season for Niece Motorsports.
The organization arrives at the historic short track with a mix of veterans, rising stars and playoff hopefuls as the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series enters the final stretch of its regular season. With just four races remaining before the postseason begins, every point matters and Niece has no shortage of storylines.
Perhaps the biggest belongs to Donovan Strauss.
The 20-year-old Georgia native will make his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut in the No. 4 Chevrolet after spending the last several seasons building his résumé in the CARS Tour and Legends Car competition. While many rookies enter their first Truck Series start completely unfamiliar with the track, Strauss has valuable laps around North Wilkesboro already under his belt.
“The good news for me is I have a lot of laps around North Wilkesboro in the Late Model,” Strauss said. “My goal is to finish on the lead lap, stay clean, minimize my mistakes and show that I can do this.”
It’s a realistic approach at one of NASCAR’s toughest short tracks.
At the opposite end of the experience spectrum is Landen Lewis, who may be entering the weekend as Niece’s strongest contender for a victory.
Lewis is coming off a career-best runner-up finish at Lime Rock Park and now returns to one of his favorite racetracks. The young driver already owns a CARS Tour victory and pole at North Wilkesboro and believes those experiences could prove valuable this weekend.
“North Wilkesboro is one of my favorite tracks I’ve ever raced at,” Lewis said. “I’ve always seemed to run well here.”
The No. 45 team enters the weekend fifth in owner points and comfortably positioned above the playoff cut line, allowing crew chief Phil Gould and company to focus on chasing wins rather than simply protecting points.
Meanwhile, Andrés Pérez de Lara continues to climb the standings.
The Mexico City native is coming off one of his strongest performances of the season after finishing seventh at Lime Rock. Now sitting just 31 points below the playoff cut line, Pérez de Lara sees North Wilkesboro as an opportunity to keep his postseason hopes alive.
He’ll gain extra track time this weekend by competing in his first-ever CARS Tour Late Model Stock race on Friday night.
“I’m going to take the CARS Tour race as an opportunity to study and learn as much as I can for the truck race,” Pérez de Lara said.
A strong weekend could dramatically alter his playoff outlook.
The same could be said for Tyler Reif.
After narrowly missing several breakthrough performances this season, Reif returns to the No. 42 Chevrolet hoping familiarity with North Wilkesboro can help produce his first top-10 finish.
“It’s going to be nice to not be blind at the start of practice,” Reif said. “I’ll have an idea of where I need to be.”
For Niece Motorsports, North Wilkesboro represents more than just another race on the schedule.
The team will compete twice during the weekend, fielding a Late Model entry on Friday night before bringing four trucks to Saturday’s FaithFest 250. Combined with a Truck Series playoff battle that remains wide open, the historic short track serves as a major opportunity for the organization.
Whether it’s Strauss making his debut, Lewis chasing a breakthrough win, Pérez de Lara pursuing the playoffs or Reif searching for momentum, every Niece Motorsports driver arrives with something important on the line.
And at a place as demanding as North Wilkesboro, that’s usually when the best stories are written.
