A confirmed signing today sparked plenty of reactions among Montreal Canadiens fans.
Why didn’t Kent Hughes sign him?
Because of the expected arrival of two young forwards in Montreal during the season (around March or April).
The Pittsburgh Penguins had the same mindset, and according to D’Amico it applies to the Canadiens as well:
“This applies to the Canadiens as well with Hage, Zharovsky and co potentially landing in Montreal in the next 9 months.”
The discussion started with journalist Josh Yohe.
He explained why Pittsburgh decided to pass on Anthony Mantha despite the attractive price.
“Penguins probably would have considered bringing Mantha back if they had known that would be the price.
But have an excessive amount of forwards signed already. Have to make room for Zonnon, Horcoff, McGroarty, Hayes etc in next year or two.”

When a wave of young talent is knocking on the door, every veteran contract becomes an obstacle.
It helps explain why the Canadiens avoided signing Anthony Mantha.

Every roster spot occupied by a veteran is one less opportunity for players like Hage and Zharovsky, who could arrive sooner than many expected.
