Surrey man ticketed over $1,700 for dangerous motorcycle riding on HWY 1

A 23-year-old man from Surrey has been issued over $1,700 in tickets for weaving in and out of heavy traffic at high speeds on Highway 1 in Surrey on July 3.
Dashcam footage from a witness travelling along Highway 1 at the same time was provided to the police. It showed the motorcycle zooming down the highway near 176 Street in Surrey. The BC Highway Patrol announced on Thursday, July 16, that police were able to identify the rider and the motorcycle because the license plate was clearly visible in the dashcam footage.
The man was ticketed $196 under the Motor Vehicle Act for driving without consideration, $486 for speeding more than 60 km/h over the limit, $109 x 5 for unsafe lane changes, $109 x 4 for changing lanes without a signal and $109 for failing to supply information.
“We understand how much bad driving not only makes our highways unacceptably unsafe, it also annoys safe drivers,” says Corporal McLaughlin. “We’re enforcing these laws to improve people’s behaviour by delivering real consequences.”
Police are reminding motorists that “high-definition video is everywhere” and that they will follow up with enforcement against any dangerous drivers.
“When the video quality is high-quality, and we have a witness ready to testify in court, we can and do follow up with over-the-top driving violations,” says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “It’s not hard to imagine how the speed and unsafe driving behaviour in this video could have easily led to the motorcyclist’s death.”
