First, it was the roof. Now, the inside of Montreal’s Olympic Stadium will be getting a much-need facelift.
The Quebec government is giving the green light to the “Olympic Park to begin planning the work to modernize the interior” of the emblematic stadium, a spokesperson for the province’s tourism minister confirmed in an email Friday to The Gazette.
More details about the renovations are expected later in the day when the province makes the official announcement.
The move comes as Montreal is celebrating the 50th anniversary of hosting the 1976 Olympics, with a series of events throughout the summer.

It also comes amid pressure from Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber, who called on the province to fund a broader renovation of the venue. In June, he said the project is essential to CF Montréal’s long-term future.
Quebec has already moved ahead with a $870-million roof replacement for the Big O, which is expected to be completed in 2028. Last month, Garber stressed that fixing the roof wouldn’t be enough.
