His inspirational leadership was defined by a profound sense of compassion and an unwavering vision to defend and dignify fighters, leaving indelible legacy that we continue to remember today with deep pride.
One of his greatest and most historic personal milestones took place in June 2007, in Canastota, New York. Don José made history in golden letters by becoming the first Mexican executive to be inducted into the prestigious International Boxing Hall of Fame, a legendary institution established by legislative decree in 1984.
After participating in the magnificent and traditional Parade of Champions—waving to thousands of fans from open-top cars—the beloved leader was officially enshrined into the world’s most prestigious galaxy of Immortals, sparking jubilation across our nation’s pugilistic community.
Don José Sulaimán was inducted as part of a constellation of diadem diamonds with four-division world champions Roberto “Mano de Piedra” Durán and Pernell Whitaker, legendary Argentine trainer Amílcar Brusa, Cuban manager Cuco Conde (posthumously), and the celebrated artist LeRoy Neiman.
To Mexico’s immense pride and joy, Don José received this honor hand-in-hand and side by side, with his compatriot, the flawless and undefeated two-division world champion Ricardo “Finito” López, both joining fellow Aztec stars who already graced the rosta, including Rubén Olivares, Pipino Cuevas, and Raúl “Ratón” Macías.
In the words of our beloved Lifetime President during his deeply moving acceptance speech: “The boxers are my children, and I fight for them.” With his heart on his sleeve, Don José dedicated this distinction to his parents, his brother Héctor, and his family, to whom he offered an apology for having taken away so much time due to his absolute devotion to boxing. Furthermore, he praised the greatness of Ricardo López, calling him “Señor Excelencia” (Sir Excellence) due to his fine flawless and immaculate technique inside the ring.
Thanks to his tireless work and his induction into this temple of history, his message resonated strongly in every corner of the planet: boxing could not be fully understood without the humanitarian revolution that he personally spearheaded.
