“The Kiss,” a still hugely famous and beloved oil painting from 1909 by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, continues the LEGO Art lineup in August. The set was officially revealed today at LEGO.com. We’re showing you all the official images and rounding up the most important info.
In its early years, the LEGO Art theme focused heavily on pop-culture motifs like superheroes, famous musicians, or Mickey Mouse, for example. Lately, though, LEGO has increasingly reached out to fans of “fine art” with this theme, turning famous paintings like the Mona Lisa, van Gogh’s Sunflowers, or Monet’s Bridge over a Pond of Water Lilies into built models. Starting August 1, 2026, one of Gustav Klimt’s most famous works continues this trend: LEGO Art 31221 Gustav Klimt – The Kiss. The set will be exclusive, meaning it’ll initially only be available directly from LEGO and (later) from select retail partners, but it won’t hit general retail. First there’s a three-day Insiders pre-sale, before the set becomes available to all other customers starting August 4.
The original – a square oil painting on canvas with the impressive dimensions of 180 cm x 180 cm (70.9 in x 70.9 in) – has been on display since its completion in 1909 at the Austrian Gallery Belvedere (formerly the “Modern Gallery”) in the palace of the same name in Vienna, where it can still be viewed today. The LEGO version consists of 4,000 pieces, making it – aside from the extremely fine-tiled mosaics – the set with the most pieces in the lineup to date.
That’s also reflected in the RRP, which at $299.99 / £269.99 / €299.99 is set significantly higher than for the previous sets and is the highest yet in the LEGO Art lineup. That could also be down to the motif itself, though, since LEGO’s “The Kiss” includes lots of printed pieces to mimic the finer details of the original that couldn’t be solved structurally. Naturally, quite a few pieces in Pearl Gold and Metallic Gold were used as well, but for the background LEGO relies largely on Dark Tan.
With its dimensions of 60.8 cm x 54.3 cm (23.9 in x 21.4 in), the LEGO model deviates slightly from the proportions of the original. That’s because LEGO left out part of the original at the bottom as well as on the left and right, meaning it recreated a cropped section. You’ll find a comparison below in the slider.
In its building techniques, the LEGO version of “The Kiss” resembles many other LEGO Art sets from the recent past, since different areas rely on different construction methods, with raised sections and “greebling” used to give the picture more depth. The original painting at the Belvedere is set in a slim, gold frame, which was implemented a bit differently in the LEGO set, namely in Tan. All in all, the original was captured pretty well.
By the way: like all pictures in the LEGO Art lineup, this set of course also offers the option of hanging the model on the wall like a real painting, thanks to special pieces on the back. Naturally, LEGO’s The Kiss received an 18+ age rating, since the set is clearly aimed at an adult audience both as wall decor and because of its source material. Anyone who wants to dive deeper into the story behind the painting while building can listen to a podcast produced specifically for the set and advertised on the box.
