As quantum mechanics celebrates its hundredth birthday, researchers at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo are the only North American recipients of a quantum light source currently on a global tour.

The QuanTour initiative celebrates the advancements of quantum mechanics over the past century that showcase the potential of quantum dots. These dots could play an important role in realizing a quantum internet that can connect devices such as quantum computers and users in a quantum encryption network.

A quantum dot is a light source that produces single photons — the smallest quantity of light. The QuanTour has travelled to 14 countries across Europe and is crossing the Atlantic for the first time to visit Dr. Michael Reimer’s lab at IQC where a research group will run a series of tests on it, including validating its reliability.

Reimer is an IQC faculty member and professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His lab’s work includes cutting-edge research on quantum dots.
