SAN BERNARDINO, California – Adelaida Maria Ruiz’s ability to answer any pressure with a more resolute response allowed her to keep her world championship Saturday night.
The Lynwood, California, fighter retained the WBC super-flyweight belt by unanimous-decision over Ginny Fuchs by cores of 99-91, 96-94, 97-93 at the National Orange Show, avenging a prior loss to Fuchs.
While Fuchs 4-1 displayed an effective left, it was the responses by Ruiz, 19-1-1, that swayed the judges, although many raised eyebrows at the 99-91 margin.
Fuchs, a 2020 U.S. Olympian and close friend of three-division champion Mikaela Mayer, hadn’t fought since suffering a hand ligament injury during her 2024 split-decision victory over Ruiz in Carson, California.
Her boxing was strong in the early rounds before Ruiz’s brawling style began to achieve success in the fourth.
The eighth round revealed the mutual success as the southpaw Fuchs found Ruiz early with power shots before absorbing hard rights at the round’s close.
Fuchs sought to soften Ruiz’s power occasionally by holding as her nose began to bleed in the late going, but Ruiz came out aggressive in the 10th to seal her victory.
