Even before the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ starting quarterback was ruled out for this game people were calling this a potential revenge game.

As we know, Ottawa is having a very hard time finding a win, and Winnipeg cashed in on Ottawa’s mismanagement of Brown. And yet, in the midst of Ottawa not finding a starting quarterback they shipped off Dru Brown to the Bombers – the quarterback that may have given Ottawa the best chance to win a game. Not only did Ottawa ship Brown off, they sat him to begin the season, and from that point on Brown made it clear that he wanted to be traded.

So it is understandable when people, and media are referring to this as a ‘revenge game’…but I hope it is not one. In fact, I just want Brown to play the same way he did vs. Toronto.

Before I get into that, we should get up to speed on what has been happening.

The Zach Report

So we see that Zach Collaros is not on the Bombers’ roster, but where is he? Well, it is very telling as he is on the 6-game injure list. This seems to indicate a couple of possibilities (and two things could be true at the same time). First, it could indicate that the Bombers expect Zach to be out for about 6 weeks to get healthy. It is true that you can pull a guy off the 6-game injury list. However, if a player stays on the 6-game injury list for the entire 6 games, then that portion of their salary does not go against the salary cap. Second, putting Zach on the 6-game injury list could indicate that the Bombers want to get Zach as healthy as possible, before returning him to action, and believe that Dru Brown can get the job done for the next six games.

If Zach stays on the 6-game injury list for the full six games, he would come back just in time to play Saskatchewan at the Labour Day Classic.

Why I Do Not Want A Revenge Game
In all likelihood, Collaros will miss all or most of the next six games. That means that Dru Brown is going to need to figure out how to win consistently. And with him looking at this week vs. Ottawa as a ‘revenge game’ may help his this week, it will do him no good in the following weeks. I would rather Dru Brown and the Bombers figure out how to put together a consistent game plan for Brown to win numerous games. Remember, the Bombers did not bring in Brown so that the Bombers could beat Ottawa. The Bombers Brought Brown in so that if the Bombers had to replace Zach for an extended period of time, or at a crucial time in the playoffs they would have a quarterback with CFL experience that can win. Unless you are Kevin Glenn that did the CFL tour, it would be impossible to have a ‘revenge game’ every week.

Additionally, if Brown allows this to be a ‘revenge game,’ that may be to his own demise. In his previous interviews it seems like he does not care much for emotional motivations. Rather, he is out there to play the game and execute at a high level. Should he buy into the ‘revenge game’ idea, it could be distracting.

Brown simply needs to do much of what he did last week for the next six weeks.

Clean up the one interception, and the above should get a bunch of wins in the next six games. It is clear that the Bombers are not micromanaging Brown, a question that I had going into the last game.

When we were not sure how long Collaros would be out for I said this, “In that case, if the Bombers know that Collaros is out for a bit, I would want to see exactly what I have in a non-limited Brown.” And I think we saw that in the Toronto game.

So while the story line will be there as the media pushed it, and the fans want it…no, I have no desire for this to be a revenge game.
