A woman in her 40s died after a fire early Sunday in her apartment unit in St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, a municipality about 20 kilometres west of Quebec City.
The 911 dispatch centre received several calls at about 1 a.m. Sunday about the presence of flames and smoke in a 42-unit residential building.
Firefighters found the woman unconscious in a burning unit on the second floor; she died in a hospital. There were no other injuries. Damage was limited to her unit and the one directly beneath it.
Alexandre Lajoie, a spokesperson for the Quebec City fire department, said in a statement that there is no indication of foul play. The provincial coroner’s office is handling the case, with assistance from Quebec City police.
