SASKATOON, Sask. – On Tuesday night (Apr. 29), the University of Saskatchewan (USask) Huskie Football team saw three more student-athletes head to the next level after Seth Hundeby, Lane Novak, and Daniel Wiebe were selected by the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2025 CFL Draft. Following the selection of the trio, the Huskie Football program now boasts a total of 82 players who have been selected in the draft. It also marked the sixth consecutive season in which the Dogs have seen at least three players selected by CFL clubs.Â

Seth Hundeby was the first USask student-athlete to hear their name called on draft night, with the 6-foot-3, 251lb linebacker going 34th overall in the fourth round to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. A 2024 Canada West All-Star and All-Canadian, Hundeby experienced a remarkable season in his fourth year with the Dogs. The local Saskatoon product finished the campaign with 41.0 total tackles (5th in Canada West), 4.0 tackles for a loss, and 2.0 sacks while leading the Huskie defence to a Hardy Cup appearance. In his four seasons with the Huskies he has been one of the Dogs’ most consistent performers, surpassing 45 tackles in each of the past three seasons while owning 17 tackles for a loss and 10.5 sacks through 42 career games. Hundeby’s selected also marked the 11th time a USask linebacker has been selected in the draft.Â
Despite an already impressive resume, it was Hundeby’s performance at the 2025 CFL Combine last month that saw his draft stock rise to the top three rounds. Already boasting the frame for the pros, he ran a 4.7 second 40-yard dash while totaling 20 reps in the bench press. His showcase continued with a 35 inch vertical, 9′ 7 1/2″ broad jump, 6.88 second three-cone drill, and 4.15 second shuttle, leading many analysts and insiders to speculate that Hundeby could be a versatile player for the club that selects him.Â
While the CFL season kicks off in just over a month, it will be another year before Hundeby trades in Huskie green & white for Rider green & white, with the fourth-year engineering student committed to returning to USask and finishing his degree.
Coming off the draft board next for the Huskies was Lane Novak who was selected 45th overall in the fifth round by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to become the 12th linebacker headed to the CFL in program history. Novak, a 6-foot-1, 229lb linebacker heads east following another standout campaign for the Dogs which saw the Balgonie, Saskatchewan product total 41.0 tackles, 2.0 tackles for a loss, three defended pass, and two forced fumbles in nine games. A fourth-year arts and science student, Novak immediately made an impact in the USask defence as a rookie and has not looked back since, amassing 184 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, and three interceptions in 38 games.
Novak also impressed at the 2025 CFL Combine, earning a Coaches Pick (honourable mention) as one of the top three defensive players of the day. In addition to showing out in the live drills portion, Novak also had strong measurables, running a 4.77 40 yard dash while earning a 29 inch vertical, 9′ 1 5/8″ broad jump, 7.13 second three-cone drill, and 4.2 second shuttle drill.
Daniel Wiebe became the 13th receiver in program history selected in the CFL Draft after the pass catcher was select 69th overall in the eighth round by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Another Dog who had a career season in 2024, Wiebe was the go-to target all season long earning the Canada West ‘triple crown’ after finishing the campaign as the leader in receptions (52), yards (807), and touchdowns (7). His impressive season also made waves nationally, with only one other receiver in the country owning better production. Following the completion of the season, he was named a unanimous Canada West All-Star and First Team All-Canadian for the first time in his career.
Similairily to his drafted teammate, Wiebe also impressed CFL coaches and front office staff at the 2025 Combine leading to an improved draft position. The 5-foot-9, 185lb receiver recorded 15 reps of bench press, a 4.52 second 40-yard dash, a 37 inch vertical, and a 9′ 11 3/8″ broad jump before running a 3.95 second shuttle, the fastest time recorded at the combine since 2017.Â
Later this week, the next generation of future CFL draftees will resume their pursuit of the pros as Huskie Football returns to the field at Griffiths Stadium for the 2025 Edition of Spring Camp.Â
