Much of Alberta sits within what the industry calls Hailstorm Alley, a corridor stretching from High River through Calgary and Red Deer to Lacombe and sometimes as far north as Edmonton, considered one of the most hail-prone regions in the world. Nationally, insured losses from severe weather exceeded $8 billion in 2024, a record, before easing to $2.4 billion in 2025, still the tenth-costliest year on record.
