The Montreal Canadiens recently turned down an unusual offer. Artificial intelligence is making its way into every industry, and hockey is no exception.
A Montreal-based company wanted to work with the Canadiens, but the two sides haven’t reached an agreement.
Nicolas Cloutier of TVA Sports shed light on the situation involving Wyatt AI, a local company specializing in artificial intelligence.
The company worked with the Colorado Avalanche last season, and founder Josh Wyatt later reached out to the Canadiens about offering Montreal similar services.
In the clip, Wyatt explains why the Canadiens weren’t interested in bringing in another outside resource.
The Canadiens want to keep everything in-house, according to Josh Wyatt
Should this be viewed as a rejection of artificial intelligence? Not at all.
The Canadiens already appear to have their own resources and partnerships in place.
Wyatt explained the situation plainly.
“What we’ve noticed is that the Canadiens are a very technical organization.”
He then pointed to one specific reason behind Montreal’s decision.
“The club works with Sportlogiq, and it wants to keep everything in-house,”- Wyatt explained.
The Canadiens’ approach is understandable.
Keeping these operations internal gives the organization more control over its data, its methods and how the information is interpreted.
Artificial intelligence is becoming another tool in the same conversation as advanced analytics.
Ignoring it entirely would leave teams behind, but relying on it blindly would create a different problem.
Finding the right balance remains the smartest approach.
These tools can support scouting, player evaluation and decision-making without replacing the people responsible for making the final call.
For now, the Canadiens have decided not to pursue Wyatt AI’s offer. That doesn’t mean Montreal is turning away from artificial intelligence.
It simply means the organization prefers to rely on its existing resources and keep that work under its own roof.
