From cult films and fetishes to an early night at the club, there are plenty of things to do in Vancouver this week.
To help narrow down the options, here are a few highlights for those looking to get out of the house, July 20 to 26.
‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ anniversary tour
It’s been 25 years since the cult hit Hedwig and the Angry Inch hit the screen, and to celebrate it, the writer, director and star is touring, including two nights in Vancouver.
John Cameron Mitchell will be on not just for a screening of the genre/gender bending movie and a Q&A, but also an acoustic set with songs from the feature film.
Cameron Mitchell won’t be the eye-catching attendee, as fans are encouraged to dress up as Hedwig (or others) for the film. Prizes have been sent from the Criterion Collection and the Punk Rock Museum.
When: Monday, July 20, and Tuesday, July 21. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Eastside Arts Festival
This isn’t one event so much as it’s a collection of events.
The Eastside Arts Festival started last Friday, but runs until Sunday, July 26, with free events, live music, art shows and walking tours.
For example, on Wednesday there’s a beginner’s workshop for those interested in lino cuts and creating custom tote bags. On Thursday, there’s plein air drawing tour. And on Sunday there’s a street photography walking tour.
The epicentre of the festival is Saturday with a day of free music in Maclean Park with public art, food trucks and a beer garden. On stages there’ll be acts like Wack, Buddie and Stephen Hamm: Theremin Man.
When: Now until Sunday, July 26. Saturday’s concert runs from 3 to 8 p.m.
Where: Maclean Park and the Eastside Arts District (which centres on the Strathcona and Commercial Drive neigbourhoods and nearby areas)

Drive In at the Mall
The last drive-in theatre in the region may have closed, but this summer Richmond’s Lansdowne Centre is reviving the fun way to watch films.
The summer series starts this week, with a screen set up in the mall’s parking lot.
And instead of a concession stand, the mall’s food court can be used for snacks or dinner.
This week’s film is the Oscar-winning Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Find more info on Lansdowne Centre’s Instagram.
When: Wednesday, July 22. First-come, first-served. Film will start at sunset.

Vancouver Fetish Weekend
Ball gags, costumes and latex sound like your cup of tea?.
The Vancouver Fetish Weekend is back, and it’s more than a weekend. Kicking things off on July 23 with a meet-and-greet, the 12th edition runs until July 27 (ending with a group beach trip).
Events include multiple balls (as in dances), a day cruise and a pub afternoon.
When: Thursday, July 23 to Monday, July 27.
Where: Various Vancouver venues.

Clubbing for people with a bedtime
Bed by 10 is coming back to Vancouver.
The club night for people who don’t want to be out late is taking over Celebrities for a night evening of retro hits that starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. Or you could do this and then head to the Fetish Ball, which will just be getting underway.
Music will be ideal for those who hit the clubs in the ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s.
When: Saturday, July 25, from 4 p.m to 9 p.m.
