Summer is here, and the sun is shining — but there are plenty of ways to keep your cool in the summer heat in White Rock and South Surrey. Here’s a few ways to beat the heat:
1. Hit the beach: both White Rock Beach and Crescent Beach in South Surrey offer stretches of sand, cool ocean breezes, which can also be enjoyed from a floatie, kayak or paddle board. There’s also plenty of food and beverage offerings from local businesses to help bring temperatures down on a hot summer day, from ice cream and gelato to iced tea, iced coffees and more.
2. Swimming season: Several outdoor pools are open through the summer in Surrey — all with free admission — including Sunnyside outdoor pool at 15455 26 Avenue and Greenaway outdoor pool at 17901 60 Avenue.
3. Make a splash: Water spray parks offer a refreshing way to cool off for families, and there’s a couple in White Rock and South Surrey, including the splash zone at White Rock’s Memorial Park, with the iconic pier, promenade and ocean offering spectacular views. South Surrey Athletic Park, located at 14600 20 Avenue, offers a spray park as well, with reduced hours of 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to stage 2 Metro Vancouver water restrictions (as of June 1).
4. Friendly forests: Whether Redwood Park, Sunnyside Urban Acres Forest Park or Crescent Park, there are several forested park areas throughout the Semiahmoo Peninsula that offer cool trails and shaded play areas for families when the heat is high.
5. Bookworms unite: Both the Semiahmoo Library (1815 152 St.) and Ocean Park Library (12854 17 Ave.) offer air-conditioned spaces to read and relax for those who prefer to keep cool indoors on hot summer days.
6. Community minded: Keeping with the indoor theme, White Rock Community Centre at 15154 Russell Ave. and South Surrey Recreation Centre at 14601 20th Ave. offer air-conditioned indoor spaces for people of all ages to beat the heat.
7. Make my coffee iced: Plenty of local cafés, coffee shops, restaurants and bistros offer cool, air-conditioned spaces — often with wifi available — as well as refreshing, iced, blended beverages of all varieties.
