It never fails to amaze me how fast time flies. In anything and everything, we are expected to believe that waits for certain things are long, yet they are here before we know it. It seems like yesterday that I put up my 2026 calendar, yet here it is, late July, almost in August. Same applies in sports. I remember waiting for baseball to start, yet we’re now past the All-Star Break. The NFL has the longest offseason, yet Super Bowl LX seems like it was a week ago, not five months ago. And NFL’s preseason is two weeks away. WOW!

Regarding the Canadian Football League, it definitely seems like the season started yesterday. In actuality, we are now seven weeks into the season. Exactly one-third of a 21-week regular season is in the books. Similar to the first six weeks of the NFL season, the first seven weeks in the CFL are basically a weeding out process, separating the “who’s who” from the “who cares?” in the league.

So here’s how things look so far:

West Division

With 33 1/3% of the season in the books, the Edmonton Elks are in first place in the West Division. I can’t believe it. This team has been terrible ever since the 2020s started, with their best seasons in this decade being a pair of 7-11 campaigns in 2024 and 2025. Already, they’ve won five of their first six games, putting them on a 15-3 pace, with their latest win being against the Lions to kick off Week 7. The Saskatchewan Roughriders, who were idle in Week 7, are in second place at 4-1, a great start for the defending champions. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers sit at 4-2 after defeating the Ottawa Redblacks in OT, doing so in the first game in CFL history to need dueling two-point conversions.

The Calgary Stampeders sit outside the division’s playoff line at 2-4, coming off a home loss to the Montréal Alouettes on Friday. As for the aforementioned BC Lions, they’re 1-5, with their one win being against the Elks in their first meeting.

East Division

In the East, the Montréal Alouettes are in control, sitting on top of the division with a 5-1 record after defeating the Stamps in that high scoring battle, and then there’s the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Toronto Argonauts. The two foes faced each other on Saturday, with the TiCats winning, 24-23, after yet another missed field goal by Toronto. Even worse: one of our missed kicks was an extra point. Even worse than that: regarding that missed FG, it would have been a rouge last year. It’s not anymore.

As a result of the victory, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats are now 3-3 and sit in second place in the East Division, while the Toronto Argonauts drop to 2-4. Three straight losses for the Boatmen, but at least we’re not the Ottawa Redblacks. Ottawa is still looking for their first win of the season.

Week 8 kicks off the heart of the season, and it begins with a Western battle between the Edmonton Elks and the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday, July 23. On Friday, July 24, it’s another Western battle, this time between the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (the only game not airing on CBS Sports Network). On Saturday, July 25, the BC Lions will host the Toronto Argonauts, and finally, Sunday, July 26 will feature an Eastern battle between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Montréal Alouettes.
