An original part of Scotsburn Recreation’s facilities has received improvements for more people to enjoy.
Part of what were tennis courts has been remarked for pickleball use to reflect the sport’s growing popularity. Upgraded mesh fencing surrounds the court.
Rae Gunn, who is president of the Scotsburn Recreation Club that oversees the facilities, noted the growing proliferation of designated or converted pickleball courts throughout Pictou County in locations that include River John, Pictou, Trenton and Little Harbour.
“Pickleball is very popular,” she said. “People of all ages come here to play. We have two pickleball courts and a tennis court. Members of the 55-Plus Club play here and do pickleball lessons. There’s no membership fee. It’s just a fun thing.”
She also noted that the tennis courts and the ball field beside them were the first facilities on the site.
The changes are somewhat overshadowed by the ongoing work to complete the club’s new building that is located beside Scotsburn Elementary and in front of the playground and sports area.
Work on the building is continuing as people are available. It was envisioned to offer more multi-use opportunities than the club’s previous location in the centre of the village.
“They’re doing some interior work, some strapping and insulation,” Gunn said.
Local 4-H club member Myra Dewar was welcomed back to work as a summer student on the grounds.
“It’s pretty good,” she said. “I like it. I was here last summer too. It’s pretty cool to see the building come together.”
Other projects include offering a Trail Head Park as a gateway to hiking trails in and around Fitzpatrick Mountain to encourage more active living outdoors and working in partnership with the food forest project that is also located on the grounds.
