Windsor’s mayor on why this matters for Canada
Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens says this day has been 25 years in the making, noting that Windsor is the automotive capital of Canada and the tool and mould capital of North America.
“This region is the beating heart of trade in Canada,” he said.
He also directly thanked Carney directly, citing the prime minister’s “careful and strategic work” to get the project over the finish line. That’s notable because Dilkens has been more closely aligned with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in the past.
“All of that matters very much right at this very moment,” he said, adding that numerous politicians, community leaders and business leaders helped make this moment happen — including amid today’s “complex” political environment.
He nodded several times at U.S.-Canada relations, even referring to Ontario’s premier as “Captain Canada,” and said that today’s historic news reveals how those involved have stood against uncertainty, threats and bullies.
