Surrey is growing, and we’re investing in infrastructure, amenities and community spaces to support that growth. Through a $1.6 billion capital plan, major projects are helping improve transportation, expand recreation opportunities and create new places to live, work and connect. Here are four major projects currently underway or in development across Surrey.
Newton Community Centre
One of the largest recreation investments in Surrey’s history is taking shape in Newton. The new $310.6 million Newton Community Centre will bring expanded recreation, culture and library services to one of Surrey’s fastest-growing communities. The facility will include a 50-metre pool, two full-sized gymnasiums, fitness amenities, arts and childcare spaces, multi-purpose rooms and a significantly expanded library for residents of all ages to enjoy
Early works commence in the summer of 2026 for the 16,260 square metre facility with a completion date set for the spring of 2030.
72 Avenue improvements and extension
The 72 Avenue project is the largest road investment in Surrey’s history. The over $150 million extension from 152 Street to Highway 15 will improve traffic flow, strengthen connections between communities and support future growth. The project will help create another east-west route linking Newton, Fleetwood, Clayton and Cloverdale. Work is underway and anticipated to be completed by 2031.
Centre Block
Centre Block is helping shape the future of Surrey City Centre. The project will bring new office, retail and educational space to downtown Surrey, including the future home of Simon Fraser University’s Stephens Family School of Medicine. Phase one includes a 12-storey tower that will house the first new medical school in Western Canada in nearly 60 years. The School of Medicine will occupy seven floors with high-tech classrooms, labs, research spaces and an outpatient clinic. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with completion anticipated in the summer of 2030
Once Phase one and Phase two are complete, Centre Block will add approximately 2 million square feet of office and retail space, creating more opportunities for residents to work and learn closer to home.
City Centre Arena and Cultural Event Centre
A new 10,000-seat City Centre Arena is planned for Surrey’s downtown core. The future home of the Vancouver Giants will create a new venue for sporting events, concerts, cultural performances and community celebrations while supporting a growing sports, culture and entertainment district. It will also feature a 250-room hotel with restaurants, a coffee shop and banquet space. Construction of the City Centre Arena is anticipated to begin summer of 2027, with completion of both the City Centre Arena and hotel anticipated in 2030.
As the centrepiece of Surrey’s future entertainment district, the project will help attract visitors, support economic growth and expand the city’s ability to host major events, conferences and cultural experiences.
