With what we’ve seen over the past few hours in Brossard, we can now confirm that Kent Hughes is going to announce an important signing for the Canadiens.
Kent Hughes will indeed end up confirming a contract extension for Marco Marciano, and the evidence was right there in Brossard this week.
The goaltending coach was working with Jacob Fowler. A seemingly insignificant detail, but one that says a lot about what’s coming.
It was Maxime Truman who pointed it out.
He highlighted a little-known rule that completely changes how the situation should be viewed.
In theory, an NHL team’s coaches are not allowed to work with NHL players during the summer.
So why hasn’t Kent Hughes officially announced Marciano’s new contract yet?
Apparently, it’s simply to allow him to continue working with the Canadiens’ goaltenders this summer.
And that’s exactly what reveals management’s intentions.
You don’t send a coach to work with your goaltenders all summer only to let him walk away afterward.
Yes, Marciano is expected to sign soon!
Marco Marciano’s contract with the Montreal Canadiens is only a matter of time
Marciano is currently working with Jacob Fowler, who is likely the Canadiens’ goaltender of the future, at the team’s own facilities. That certainly doesn’t look like a goodbye.
It would be counterproductive.
The most likely scenario is simply a matter of timing.
Wait until training camp to officially announce the contract while still allowing Marciano to get to work immediately.
This administrative delay benefits everyone.
The club gets to take advantage of its goaltending coach’s expertise throughout the summer without running afoul of the NHL rule.
The question is no longer whether Marciano is staying, but when Hughes will finally make it official.
And that announcement could very well wait until training camp.
“Officially, is Marciano currently unemployed? Are we going to wait until camp to announce a new contract?
That would allow Marciano to work with the Habs’ goalies during the summer…”
