I do not care who is in for the BC Lions, Perkins or dare I even say Salter (and it looks like it will be Salter). If the Bombers play the way they did against Calgary, BC will find their second win of the season and Winnipeg will fall to 4-4.

While 4-4 is not a terrible start to the season, it would be more about how they got there then the record itself, and their trajectory would be showing a decline.

I guarantee you that there will be chatter about starting Elgersma this week against BC. Honestly, I believe doing so would be a mistake for a couple of reasons. First, I have seen more than enough young quarterbacks get burnt and have CFL careers ruined because CFL teams put them in too early in nearly an impossible situation. If Elgersma is the succession plan to Collaros, as I believe he is, then the Bombers need to project Elgersma…even at the cost of some wins.

Second, what do the Bombers do if they put in Elgersma, and he does not do well? How do they possibly go back to Brown without putting themselves into a complete quarterback revolving door situation? BC’s Last Game
BC did not play well their last game as their run and pass games both struggled.

What BC did do well was holding Toronto to only 26 points. Although that may not have been as much BC’s doing as Toronto showing who they are. In all but 2 games this year Toronto has not cracked the 30 point mark.

As I mentioned last week leading up to Winnipeg’s game, Winnipeg is not going to win in a high-scoring gunslinging game. BC is showing that they will put up around 27 to 30ish points per game. That still is not great for the Bombers who also are right around that 30 point per game mark.

What Winnipeg Must Do Differently
1) Limit Interceptions
Winnipeg simply cannot continue to throw that many interceptions. 4 against Calgary, and what could have been 5 against Ottawa. I will not hang it all on Dru Brown, although he deserves some of the blame. His passes have not been on target, and often high. But his receivers have not helped him out either. On 50/50 balls, they have not made enough effort to make sure that either they catch the ball or that it falls incomplete.

2) More 7’s
Yes, Castillo helps the team win by having an exceptional range for field goals. But it is ridiculous if he is kicking 5, or 6 field gaols because the Bombers simply cannot finish the drive with a major. I am more than fine with field goals when other teams would be punting. What does not help the Bombers’ case is the inability to finish drives. The Bombers went out in free agency and apparently upgraded their receivers. I was excited when I saw their moves in the off-season. I am less than excited when I see their performance so far.

3) Figure Out Who You Are?
For me, this has been a problem since 2025! I wrote about that in 2025 here. The difference is that I do not know that the Bombers knew that was the issue in 2025. In 2025 they were talking about just working harder. That was problematic because hard work was not the issue, and I wrote about that here in 2025 before most were talking about it.

4) Collaros Is Not The Saviour
There are some that say the Bombers need Collaros in to win. Sorry, I am not buying that. Winnipeg went out aggressively to get Dru Brown for exactly this situation. After the 2025 season they realized that they did not have backups that could get enough consistent wins, and they believed Brown could be that guy. The way the Bombers are playing right now I am not convinced that Collaros leads them to win after win.

The offensive line is porous right now. Collaros would be either getting rocked, or running for his life. For his part, Bryant has not been nearly as good as he used to be. Father Time catches up with everyone regardless of what you have done in the past.

If we want to believe that Collaros wins the Bombers games right now, then there is another reality that we must face – and it is not pretty. That is this, the Bombers are in trouble when Collaros retires. There is a really good chance that Collaros considers retirement in the off-season. And if he does, and if Elgersma is not quite yet ready to the be the number one quarterback for Winnipeg, and if Brown is the main reason Winnipeg is losing games…then they are in trouble in 2026. I understand that is a lot of ‘if’s’ but they likely are all true.

That means, for this game against BC Winnipeg cannot simply try harder, they must change the way that they play the game.

Final Thoughts
There is a common answer to all four of these things that Winnipeg must do differently…run the football more. Running the football gives Brown more time when he is going to make throws. It should also extend Bomber drives so that they can get more touchdowns. Running the ball would help them establish an identity, and it would help their offensive line issues.

Here is the problem. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers offensive coordinator, Tommy Condell, has shown that he is a run first guy. I am not sure that the Bomber can change how they play.

In his interview Bombers offensive coordinator said that he thought it was the best decidision to in the game to not have Brady run the ball in the fourth quarter. What? Excuse me! And when asked a follow up question, he doubled down on it. Watch it for yourself.
