Tight competition at South Surrey golf course men’s championship
It was a close field of competitors at the annual two-day Senior Men’s Golf Club Championship at Nico Wynd Golf Course in South Surrey July 21 and 23.
Featuring sagas of collapses, comebacks and ties, the coveted title of champion is shared by a gross score winner and a net score winner after factoring in established handicaps, senior men’s club media relations director Ross Ruddick shared in an email.
With exceptional weather conditions on both Tuesday (July 21) and Thursday (July 23), 45 of the Club’s 87 members qualified or chose to enter the competition.
On the gross score side, Day One saw four names in the hunt, Ruddick — who competed in the tournament and came in sixth — continued.
Blair Smith carded 76, followed by Jamie Mills and Doug McPhee at 77 and the 2023 and 2025 champion, Doug Hastings with a 78.
Smith and Mills, although new to the senior division, have impressive resumés with the Saturday division, with five club championships for Blair and ten for Jamie, Ruddick noted.
On the net score side, the day one challengers were Doug McPhee, Ray Goode (2022 Gross Champion), Brian Boivin, Jack Bowman, Peter Taylor, Bob Smith, Tietzmann and Mac Petrie, who were all within a few strokes of each other.
Thursday started cloudy and breezy but, as the weather heated up, so did the competition.
On the gross side, 2024 Champ Brian Paetkau recovered from a poor Tuesday start and ultimately ended up in third place with a three-stroke improvement.
Smith challenged but couldn’t close it out and finished second to his good friend and first-time Senior Champion winner, Jamie Mills, who improved by three strokes from Tuesday, Ruddick said.
On the net side, Petrie contended with an eight-stroke improvement, Tietzmann was steady by cutting off two strokes, Ken Cochrane came from behind with a massive 10-stroke reduction, and Bob Smith entered the mix by carding an 88 and 87 — and Bowman wouldn’t go away after shooting 81 for a four-stroke reduction.
It wasn’t a good day for Goode, as he dropped out of contention with six more strokes over Tuesday, Ruddick shared.
The two remaining challengers were Boivin and McPhee and, although Boivin gave back eight strokes from his impressive Tuesday play, he ended up in a tie with McPhee, each with a net two-day score of 132.
The tiebreaker in the Nico Wynd Men’s Golf Club is called “Retrogression” as it compares scores on the final 9, final 6, final 3 and final 1 holes until the tie is broken, Ruddick explained, and that process handed the title to McPhee, leaving Boivin in second place, and a two-way tie between Tietzmann and Petrie for third.
Senior Club captain Peter Taylor then presented the winner’s plaque to Mills and McPhee to the applause of the assembled members.
Next up is the Saturday Men’s Club Championship, which is scheduled for Aug. 15-16; it is expected that many of the course’s senior men will compete in that gruelling event as well.
