Surrey buying 3 pumper fire trucks for $5M

Surrey city council approved the purchase of three pumper fire trucks for $5,093,272.80 on July 27. It awarded the contract to Safetek Emergency Vehicles to supply and deliver them, with the spending limit set at $5.5 million.
One truck will be added to the fleet and the other two will replace two trucks that are 14 and 15 years old and nearing the end of their service life.
City hall received three bids and Safetek came in with the shortest delivery time, between 340 and 370 days.
Brian Edwards, Surrey’s general manager of public safety, noted that Hub Fire Engines & Equipment Ltd. submitted a lower cost bid of $4,875,346.56 but with a proposed delivery timeline of 1,076 days, roughly 23 months longer than Safetek’s delivery time.
“Dependable Truck and Tank Limited provided a comparable, but slightly longer, delivery estimate than Safetek, however their cost is higher,” Edwards told council. “Safetek offers the shortest delivery timeframe, is a lower cost than Dependable, and has satisfactory prior experience supplying similar fire apparatus to the City.”
Meantime, on June 29 council instructed city staff to buy a Ladder Quint fire truck for $3,272,516.80 from Safetek with the spending limit set at $3.5 million.
Edwards told council this truck would be delivered to Surrey in two to 2.5 years.
He said the new Quint will replace a truck that’s at the end of its service life, “has been fully depreciated and will be 20 years old by the time the replacement unit arrives.”
