David Coulthard: ‘It was like first day of school, and I’m talking kindergarten, in the way that drivers were reacting to blue flags. Now, some will say the timing streams had an issue, but there is such a thing as just being spatially aware, and your engineers actually looking over the pit wall, and I made this comment in commentary, very few of the teams now actually have a gap on their what is affectionately known as the ‘prats perch’, the engineering wall where the engineers and the team principal normally sit. In the case of Toto (Wolff), of course, he’s sitting back in the garage, but they look, and they did look over the pit wall back in the day, and you have a sort of awareness of where the other cars are. So, you can’t ever factor in qualifying on somebody coming out of the pit lane, but in a grand prix, when people are circulating at pace, you can usually tell – well, not usually, you absolutely can tell – it just wasn’t good enough. There was a lot of people not reacting to blue flags.’

‘I play chess. Not as seriously as I did in in F1. In F1, it was a very, very good way to pass time, but also I feel like it was always good to try and work out somebody’s mind. I remember I did one interview where we were where we were playing chess, and (my opponent) was a 2,600 rating (Ed: i.e., world class), and he had two coaches and stuff. And I just played for fun, and I think he was just so focused on asking me questions that I ended up beating him. So I was pretty stoked about that! But my rating’s gone down a lot since. I mean, I was probably around the 1,500 to 1,600 rating (Ed: …which is excellent for a casual player) and now I’m probably back in the beginner level.’

Pirelli has chosen its C2, C3 and C4 compounds for Formula 1’s first race on the new Madring.It will use the same compounds for the next round, F1’s final visit to Zandvoort.For Monza, Pirelli will bring the softest tyres available: C3, C4 and C5.#F1
